The check engine has to light when anything emission related is at fault. The hand book usually says something along the lines of 'stop immediately' or take to deallership as soon as possible. Some times the light is on and the car runs fine. It's very rare that you have to stop imediately due to a light, if the problems that bad the fault would cause the car to stop
