I didn't need to carry out a repair Derek - I had a spare one from a car I had scrapped which was in good condition so I fitted it.
Did a similar thing to Brian though recently when the reverse gear interlock cable broke on my daughter's Citroen van. They wanted a staggering 280 odd quid for the complete gearchange assembly, so I got a cable from the local cycle shop with one end nipple correct and secured the other end with a cut down bit of chocbloc.
