Have you checked the Coolant Level. Your symptoms sound very like a leaking Inlet Manifold Joint which normally affects Nos. 1 and 4 Cylinders, causing dampness within the Cylinders until it is burnt off.
Check Coolant level asap, and if low have the Inlet Manifold joint renewed with the latest type Joint, Part No. LKJ101110 Dark Grey/Black in colour available from Rimmers etc..
