This is FYI not for use in this instance.
In this instance the router substitutes for a PC. The IP address supplied by the cable system is used by the router. The router performs NAT network address translation, supplying local addresses of 192.168.1.2 - up to 253 if configured so. 253 being the maximum number of PCs you can connect by wire, limitation is generally 10 by wireless. This allows for any computers to be hot swapped or connected without the need to reboot either the modem or the router.
If connecting one PC directly to the modem, then swapping PC's requires the modem to be rebooted. (To forget what was connected to it and start again.)
I agree ref. rebooting your PC when changing from wired to wireless connection. I am used to Macs which pick up the change automatically
BTW Thanks for the heads up. I wasn't aware that Virgin supply these routers already configured with their own firmware, username and password.
I have been supplying Netgear kit to my clients for the last seven years so am pretty familiar.
