This tax on funded pension (that did not effect the Public Sector unfunded schemes) together with the constant embellishment of Final Salary schemes made such schemes more and more expensive and was the death knell of the Private Sector Final Salary Schemes.
The cost increase was never a problem for the unfunded Public Sector Schemes because the tax payer simply stumps up the money.
