Happened to me on my old mk1 zt when the seals give up on the high pressure pump effectively pumping diesel into the sump. When the sump filled and overcame the pcv system thats when it happened. Damn scary and mine was an auto, stopped it by slamming it through the gears guess I was lucky. New main seal in hp pump and took 14 litres out the sump which only holds 7? All was fine after I literally poured the remaining oil out the intercooler
