Pulling the handbrake up a notch or two improves things very slightly, but the rears were adjusted a very few thousand miles back, so it doesn't make sense that they're so badly out of adjustment to make the whole system poor.
I have only driven very short distances for months now and am not a heavy braker.
The brakes work ok in everday 30-40 mph driving, but on the odd occasion you need a bit a bit more, they inspire no confidence whatsoever.
As I said, I need to get them sorted.

This is exactly what happened to mine ok at low speed normal driving but when on the motorway or at speed they were useless. You may have the same problem I had. Once the dodgy Pagid discs were changed to the Unipart ones I have had no problems with stopping from any speed.
