Just look at Senna's 1989 pole lap at Suzuka in the mighty McLaren-Honda V10. His lightning-fast gear-changes and the perfection of his rev-matching while down-changing, simultaneously blipping the throttle and braking, is something else. Today's F1 just doesn't get the pulse racing in the same way:

Totally agree. It has lost much of its raw power and driver engagement with the machine. Gadgets galore now.
Even the noise has gone. Internal combustion is the only race engine that sounds and smells fantastic. The start straight in 1993 when I attended both races in the UK was just fantastic.
I was lucky enough to see James Hunt’s last ever GP car with the Wolfe team. Looked like it was a kit car cobbled together in a shed. Imagine 200mph in that!
