1) Sensor has failed/too old and tired to correct mixture properly
2) There's a combustion issue. An incomplete combustion could read lean (due to excess air in the exhaust gas) so the ECU adds fuel to fix this "lean" problem hence a rich smell.
This post is very interesting to me. My diesel van has been causing horrendous problems over last few months. E m l came on with message “faulty anti pollution”. A diagnostic check revealed faulty Maf, which I replaced, and a leaking injector. I have since had the van to a diesel specialist and had the injectors cleaned and new seals and copper washers fitted. It stopped the leak, but the van still chucks out white smoke on cold start and emits a foul fumey type smell. I am suspecting that the cat has failed,as I had another one of these vans a few years ago,(Citroen Dispatch), but the older shape. I had a load of trouble with that at the end of my ownership, lost power and awful smell. After much investigation and advice from a local garage, I disconnected the cat, and took van for a run, result was it ran normally. Sadly with this van I can’t do that test as the cat comes straight off the manifold and is a one piece exhaust. I have booked van in to the same firm that did the injector work for further tests.
