I confess I haven't read all this thread so forgive me if this has been covered.

There is an Insurance dimension to this. Most policies insist the vehicle is operated according to the manufacturer's specs. If obvious safety aspects (there seems to be no doubt about that on here) are removed, misused or ignored then the policy is void. That is a very deep hole from which to crawl. Just get the right battery.
