What is going on, Ive never seen a tool which relies on pushing the center of a rose joint before. This will damage it surely?

No it's not the right kit, it's a Vectra B/Saab tool
It's what I used, however I did machine up a proper cup
I would suggest once you remove the old bush, knock out the centre and use the outer part as a spacer
