If it's the same as the diesel, then the thrust bearing/concentric slave cylinder combo slides along a guide tube surrounding the input shaft, and fixed to the back of the bell housing. A knackered bearing/slave can put grooves on this tube, which can give unpredictable clutch action, unless polished out or replaced when the slave is replaced. A little silicon spray applied to this tube and lightly wiped off also helps with light, smooth action.
