Well, it hasn't got a motor on it so I was kind of assuming that the previous owner removed it to try and fix or replace it but never got round to it.
I suppose the possibility that the gearbox might be done as well makes the plan to just buy a motor slightly riskier.

go for a full drive assembly and cover the bases.... the offer of a full unit for 30 sounds like a good one and will leave you with spare parts...
