thought I would post an update.
we went to pick up the car on Saturday and it looked much better, having had a full valet. the boot opened and first thing I noticed was damp right in the middle of the boot... decided to go ahead with the purchase with a view to reading up on and carrying out the minor repairs re: the damp.
Since then unfortunately some of the mould appears to have come back. I have some dehumidifiers on the way as well as specialist mould spray & borax powder so I can tackle that. I will have a look at the sunroof drain and plenum as soon as I get the chance then get round to figuring out what's causing the boot leak.
As far as driving it, everything runs as expected. I am hearing a faint noise coming from the left side of the engine bay, almost like a whirring sound, when out of the car. that's something I will need to investigate.
