More info...and some (anticipated) bad news.
The 1.2mm wire rope from Wilco is far too stiff. It won't conform to the curve, or drop into the groove of the 'wheels', and puts unacceptable side loads on them. Further, the screw-type nipples are asymmetric, putting the screw end outside the surface of the 'wheel and causing drag on the casing. This cheap solution is a non-starter.
I had a flash of inspiration last night; or, I hope it was, recalling that pike fishermen put a wire trace between the hook and the line to protect against the pike's teeth. Most versions I found are too thin, but Amazon list a German source of 0.6mm stainless steel, 7x7 rope for that purpose. Its not cheap, and is coated with something brown, which I trust will be removable by fair means or foul. Consequently I have ordered some, together with the special flux recommended by Venhill for soldering stainless steel. Both should come by the weekend.
Fingers crossed for a practical solution,
Derek.
