I tried the cycle shop I had in mind - Old School establishment and a very knowledgeable proprietor, but no luck. Apparently they can't source the ends.
Looks like I'll have to try and locate a scrapper who is prepared to check the condition of the cable before sale. What are the odds on that, I wonder!
