A hall switch? That'll explain why when I looked at pics of one it didn't resemble any brake light switch I'd seen before!
As to the fuses and corrosion, yet another "common" problem?
Many thanks everyone. I'll continue my daily checks for the moment, and I'll see about a new brake light switch if it occurs again.
