Firstly it is definitely the thrust bearing, I had a similar experience with my 75 diesel. I had the whole lot replaced,clutch assembly master cylinder, slave cylinder and dmf. Cost me £870, after being told the car would be ready on a certain day, the mechanic that did the job rang me and told me there was a problem but wouldn’t say what. He rang back later with a bull ... story about end float on the crankshaft. After posting on here, I was informed that the bloke was talking out of his backside. Anyway about 6 months later, It had the same problem as you, I decided not to claim on the warranty as I didn’t want that mechanic near my car again. Instead I got a trusted garage used by a fellow member to do the job and the bearing fell to bits when he removed it from the car. It was a LUK part too. I would take a copy of your warranty and invoice to your local CAB and ask them where you stand. A lot of these so called warranties have get out of jail free cards written in small print.
