From what i recall, when posting on here about this happening to me many years ago, the Passat of the same era, suffered with this as well.
As said, silicone spray solved the problem Gave all a shot again every year, at the start of the cold season and never suffered the problem again.
Also, be aware of the 'machine gunning' boot release, when freezing conditions prevail !!
