problem solved
So I replaced the IPK and everything apart from the gearbox came back to life. So I replaced the gearbox ecu and now everything works. I assume that disconnecting and reconnecting the A-pillar earths with the battery connected must have spiked the IPK and auto-box ecu somehow.
