If the engine continued to run it was a clutch fault. But engine shut down immediately both times. The common denominator is the longish motorway runs, probably the first for god knows how long.

I should have been more specific, the gearchange only became stiff when hot after a decent run, it would return to normal when cold and stay that way until the next long journey although it did gradually get worse - I.e. would start to get stiff after progressively shorter runs.
