Just shows some people who use eBay listen to good advice, rather than sell the guy a unnecessary part, I offered my advice and this was his reply a few days later

Just a big thanks for your advice the other day, the mechanic at work was able to weld a new flexi in today, and the car is good as new. Looks like it was bodged on top of a previous bodge. Was a pig to do, but now quiet again
