After more than fifteen years under compression, it's likely the rubber has hardened / flattened. You'll never know unless this is renewed and the orange clip is fitted. Most 1.8T owners went though this years ago, but there's clearly some that have hung on. So, eliminate FFS and go from there.

TC I'm sure you knew what I came on here to report.......Plenty of fuel when cranking so went back to the start of the problem and removed the filter and took it apart,the inside was black as ink and there I believe I have found the problem
