Broken Coil springs seems to be almost an epidemic these days, I have lost count of the amount I have replaced.
I will say you rarely see one that has broken that still has paint on it, usually they are rusted or at least in the area where they have broken. Probably a combination of fatigue, rust and age. If you keep bending any piece of metal for long enough it will usually break.
The fact that most motor factors keep all the common ones in stock tells you how bad it is, they don't even carry spark plugs for some cars yet they will have new springs on the shelf for the same vehicle. ( MX5 )
