Default Reversing aid fault

My 2001CDT Conn SE, has recently exhibited a high pitched continuous tone squeal on occasion when reversing.

When it does this, it is a squeal at about twice the frequency of the normal continuous tone you get when you've reached an obstruction. and subsequent operations of the reverse gear fail to re-start it, although it had started OK with the single bleep sound before the fault happened

Anyone know what's the cause. At present the problem is only intermittent, but I dare say it is a sign of something on the way out.
