As topman states above, maintaining three cars on the road will not be cheaper than two, even if one of the two is a low MPG model. This is unless your wife is covering say 20k+ miles in the V6 each year.

Having said that, having three (or more) cars between two people does provide a level of flexibility - something I practise myself.
