Thermostat housing is cracked, leaking coolant into the V, this will account for the overheating issues. Change the Thermostat and carefully bleed the system and the heater should kick into life.
I'm glad there is no mixing of oil and coolant. Please report back with you findings.
The car will serve you well and the forum and members are on hand with any help they can give. Absolutely no need to even contemplate breaking the car..
