I would not go to the trouble of changing a functioning thermostat (and the associated pipes), unless you have to go in there in any case. Based on the age of your car, the belts could well be due for a change, in which case the thermostat and the water pump as well as the belt tensioner should be replaced, without hesitation!.
However the plastic will fail sooner or later, and you must just bear that in mind. As long as you keep a close eye on the water level, you usually get a small leak developing over time, and should get enough warning, if you are alert.
