Update on my clattering noise:
Breakdown mechanic diagnosed broken timing chain tensioner on basis that noise is coming from top of engine rather than lower down.
Car now recovered to Wales. My garage have had a look and excluded external cause ie crank pulley, agreeing with London mechanic that the problem is top of engine and internal.
Now awaiting estimate to open up and fix possible broken tensioner - sounds expensive.
Now seriously considering selling car as is although I have put a fair bit of money into it over past 18 months.
