Hi, I had the same problem and also wondered what to use ?
Looking around the shed one day, and being a plumber, I came across a can of silicone lubricant spray used for putting plastic push-fit pipe fittings together.
I gave this a try with quite good results.
Available from most good plumbers merchants.
