Spent a bit of my youth chasing the 55s around Scotland. I presume you kniw a bit about them but for others...
The English Electric Deltic Class 55 diesel was powered by two delta formation two stroke engines. They were in fact marine engines. The six pistons on each delta formation pushed against each other in pairs. These two power plants each powered a generator that drove 6 ( 3 each bogie) traction motors. This produced amazing power and a very unique sound. ( and a lovely smokey diesel plume out of the two exhausts. What machines. In fact the ZT 260 of trains. Most powerful diesel locomotive in the world at time of production!
