I would believe but dont actually know for sure, that the rubber you refer to (mine is same) would have been either used in other auto rover built cars or perhaps it had been forethought for introducing a tiptronic type box.

Having dug out a lot of research on the 506 box recently for fluid change, I dont recall the jag tiptronic box being the same (the non tiptronic was but with different ratios i believe)
