Firstly, Clive, welcome to the car side of the forum.


As a starting point, I would put a fully charged battery on the car and test for alternator voltage with the engine running. If the car has covered reasonable mileage (100k+ miles) it is more likely to be worn alternator components than the wiring purely on the basis of probabilities.
