Sorry to hear your cars been damaged it's not a nice feeling when it happens.
You are right to worry as most likely the insurance will deem it a total loss but won't be Cat C or D it'll be Cat N I'd expect as the categories changed last year,
To S & N for Structural & Non Structural.

As for paying for repairs out of his pocket he may have though it would be £200 - £300 & will no doubt get a fright when the quote is around £1000 plus to repair.

I'd got the insurance route by claiming off his insurance but you will need to notify your own insurance & they may also ask for an incident number so has it been reported to the police?
