It's certainly easier to remove the fuel pump with the engine out of the car Steve.

I stripped the engine out of my scrapper down just to see what made them tick, and despite it having covered around 180k miles there were no visible signs of wear - it all looked pretty much like new!

Quite remarkable, especially considering the M47 was the pioneer for BMW entering the 4 cylinder diesel market. They got it pretty much spot on.
