This particular engine, and by that I mean the M47R, has three different thicknesses of head gasket, according to tolerances, including head skims, and the pistons actually protrude through the gasket fire rings, and the clearance to the valves is minimal.

I will be carrying on with the strip down later today after real life projects have been sorted out, now we know that using a rattle gun is not recommended but always use the right tool.
