just typing a question in the technical forum helped me answer the question.
would a 7/8 AF spanner be ok for doing the belts. I think the nut is 22mm, 7/8 AF is .009 of a mm bigger, so yes, I think it will do
As for why not use a 22mm spanner... I don't have a spare 22mm ring spanner to cut up but may well have 7/8 AF
