Another thought occurs. To 'donate' is meant to be a measure of personal sacrifice, especially when acres of publicity in your own medium is the carrier of the news.
The motives would be more believable and less than looking like an attempt at sanitisation of a public image if they were anonymous. Millions 'donated' to emotive subjects, when you have countless billions, is akin to the Widow's Mite parable. Altruistic it ain't.
Oh, and the countries and politicians 'donating' public funds owe the largesse to their citizens.
