A very sad story that leaves VW Audi’s reputation in tatters.
Not that GM and others are much better. Friends who had a 4 year old Isuzu Trooper 3litre suffered catastrophic engine failure just out of warranty and GM/Isuzu were having none of it regarding any responsibility on their part. This engine was a GM unit of hugely inferior quality and design to the Isuzu 2.8 and 3.1 litre units.
Then my sons experience with his Astra where the gearbox self destructs in 40k miles. Drive a GM car where the gearleaver moves when you apply power or take your foot off and watch out for a huge bill!
The units need quality bearings not the shoddy ones GM uses.
