Timing chains were supposed to be the answer to timing belt changes and the corresponding high bill. Some of the problem is manufacturers have extended service intervals time and time again to a point where some vehicles now only need an oil change'' every 30k miles .

This is fine if the vehicle does most of its mileage on motorways or in a relatively short period but some vehicles only do 3k or 4k a year so in theory the unknowledgeable only take there vehicle in for its service when the light comes on or when the advocated mileage comes up. This does no good to items than need clean oil like the timing chains and turbos.

Some vehicles seem to suffer with this more than others, ask Corsa VW, some Peugeot's and Mini owners. I know of one Mini owner who destroyed her engine due to an oil change every 4 years. It had stretched and damaged the engine even though the car had only covered 38k.

This rarely affects the manufacturers as the vehicle is usually out of warranty. If you are buying a low mileage vehicle look in the service history for an annual oil change not that you can always trust the dealers to have carried this out if they ''think they can away with it''.
