The replacement pipe had slipped it's jubilee clip and come loose. Refitted the pipe, re-tightened the clip and ran the engine up to temperature (after refilling the coolant) and all was well.
That's always a great result an easy fix for a spine shuddering problem lol.
On a side note, i did have to keep tightening the coolant cap as the engine warmed up? Once it reached the correct temperature it no longer worked loose.

I reckon you have the fear that I had when I first got the car. The coolant cap went tightish and I feared tightening further for breaking the tank. Tighten further until it stops turning. The caps are pressure rated, so need to be very tight. One evening I came home from work with that unmistakable smell of hot coolant - my spine shuddered in fear. But it was the cap not on tight enough from checking fluids the day before and was spitting out coolant. Another full turn and all was fine.
