After spraying with easy start (which confirmed fuel starvation), did he not do a basic fuel pressure test?
This is one of the first things I check on any non-starter & could've been diagnosed within the first 20mins.
No real need to even check for a spark at the plugs if it ran on easy start!
As already said, filter separation is the likely culprit.
