When I did mine I removed the inlet manifold to get a clear view of it and manged to bend the hoses at the front which did give away and got it out that way.
Still your Method works a treat, talk about a job trying to wiggle it out from the top of the engine, did the soloniod a few months ago, Stater is like new.
