I just tried Tony's method on my 2002 saloon and the slide cannot be separated from the liner.
The middle lug of the three can be freed but the other two can't (even by bending the liner to breaking point).
Also, the belt will not go through the slot in the slide because the upper belt anchor has a big ,non-removable collar on it.
The collar (or sleeve) allows the upper belt mount to swivel (the upper fixing bolt goes through this collar).
