As I suspected the lower fixings and the screws in the wheel arch are likely to give problems as they've never been removed and live in a hostile environment.
So my question is this. If I just remove the 10 10mm bolts at the top, i.e. those above the grille, am I likely to be able to be able to pull the grille far enough forward to get a hand behind it to secure the badge with whatever backing plate/ nut it uses?

Probably, but to make it even easier, take out the 2 bolts under the wheel arch, then you can tilt the whole bumper forward. May I suggest also, replace the slam panel bolts with stainless steel, Much better.
