O-rings are essential and were always factory fitted. It's arguable whether the plastic elbow was originally designed to accomodate two rings. It's a terrible design if it was. Indeed the Rimmer listing indicates a single ring was specified:

Anyway, the default fix is to fit two O-rings. Unfortunately, the lower one seems destined to drop out of the joint at some point.
