I managed to get the plug to fit by prising up the two contact points in the socket -- they are too low down (or high up depending on which way you look at it) but have slotted in where they're meant to.

I'm looking at what looks like a square plate with a small gap between it and the arch. It has two rusty nuts / bolt heads I've rounded off. Are you saying I'm looking at two bolts which are screwed into two nuts welded on the back of that plate?
