I know what they should be, and I usually set them to 31 all round. And I do check them regularly. I checked them just before it went for alignment and they were all spot on.

It was suggested by the tyre guys that I run a higher pressure. Having briefly researched tyre wear caused by low pressure Google throws up lots of images that are very similar to what happening to mine. So somehow 31ish psi is just too low for those tyres. Realistically a higher pressure won't have much ill effect. Doing that for a while and monitoring closely might be a good idea.
