I believe the oil light pre startup is just a way of confirming the canbus electronics are functional, as there is no direct link between the dash a and oil pressure switch.
The engine rpm is also sent via can bus,. But a faiiled sensor. (crank position?) Would result in no reported rpm too.
Coolant temperature could also be used for the can bus check, but this involves putting the ipk in to test mode to check values unless engine is known to be above 60 degrees so ipk needle will definitely move)
