+1 on the MAF sensor.

Might also be worth checking the condition of the fuel filter. Metal swarf in the fuel filter return would indicate a worn high pressure fuel pump.

I had a Renault 1.9dci that gave me some issues a few months back.

Does the car rev freely in neutral? It should be hit the rev limiter around 4.5k rpm?
